From women to Women - Honoring former President Vigdis Finnbogadottir

To women all over the world.

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir made history when she became the first woman ever to be democratically elected as a nation s president in 1980. Her accomplishment still stands as a clear statement of the leadership ability of Icelandic women, their confidence and determination.  In issuing these cards, we women of Iceland wish to express our gratitude to Vigdís Finnbogadóttir for all she has meant to us, especially as an enduring and invaluable role model.

Vigdís sets the rest of us an inspiring example, not least through her diligence and the respect which she shows in carrying out every task, whether large or small. One of her greatest ambitions is to reveal and present, to both Icelanders and the outside world, the true value of Iceland, its natural environment and landscape, history and language.

Even after retiring from office, Vigdís has continued to actively support a multitude of deserving causes, always with the respect and the affection that have characterised her actions and relationships with other people. Respect and affection remain central to her legacy which sets an example for all of us to follow, whoever we are and whatever we choose to undertake.

In our words and deeds, all of us are role models in one way or another. Use these cards to write whatever words you can find to express encouragement and gratitude to others. Everything begins with words: language is the key to our humanity, to our understanding one another. Understanding, in turn, is the basis of trust, upon which successful relations depend and trust is the cornerstone of achievement in our personal lives, in our jobs, in business and in politics.

Establishing The World Language Center at the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages is important to Vigdis, not least because it is a way for Iceland to serve and promote all the world s words -those words with which all things begin.
