The recent growth of online investment clubs and club networks attracts women investors the way smoke-filled investment houses drew men 30 years ago.

The concept of women-only clubs is hardly new.  Today personal investing has moved to the Web, and women investors have followed.

Online clubs and club services proliferate. It is easier than ever to start, join and run a club. Here's how they work:

• Investment clubs generally form legal partnerships and invest regularly.
• Members meet online or in person monthly to discuss companies, stocks and investing.
  Clubs usually have 10 to 15 members.
• Each member pays a minimum monthly fee
• Members take turns researching publicly traded companies and giving presentations to the group.
  They can find most of the information they need online.
• Clubs vote as a group on how and where to invest money, based on the research and recommendations of fellow members.

Here are some tips to starting an investment club:

1. Do your homework. There are tax and legal implications to organizing and running a club. Consult your accountant. 
2. When opening your club to new members, be selective about whom you ask to join.
3. Establish a formal club. Most clubs form a partnership that has a legal agreement and bylaws.
4. Create guidelines. 
5. Develop a mission statement. Make sure everyone agrees on the investment philosophy.
